Project Information Posted

The trip is almost completely booked, emails are flying back and forth, my apartment is a giant mess of clothes and papers, and I can hardly believe that I leave in 4 days! I’m excited and terrified, all at once.

I’ll have a few more “preparation” posts over the next few days, but for now, I just have one announcement:

I’ve created a page about the projects that I intend to undertake during and after this trip. Right now, it’s mainly about my thesis. I reserve the right to change my angle if inspiration leads me in another direction, but as of right now, I’m very interested in exploring themes of Canadian identity. I dabbled in this, as it related to Canadian literature, for my first 400-level English class in undergrad, but didn’t have time to explore it fully, nor was I able to drive across the country at that time. (Note to Kirk, my prof for that course: I am still sorry that my paper was so underdeveloped.)

The Suggestion Box: British Columbia

I’m still working on a page detailing the angle I’m planning to chip at for my thesis, but for now, I thought I’d post my first Suggestion Box. I’m planning on posting on of these for each province. Since I hit British Columbia first, and I arrive in just 8 days, BC is up first.

I’ve read my guidebooks, but in general, guidebooks are written by people who earn salaries by traveling and probably have expense budgets and the like. My budget is considerably less padded. So for people who live in BC, or visitors to BC that have found gems, drop your suggestions here. What should I see, do, eat, photograph, etc?

I’ll be visiting Vancouver, Victoria, and the Kelowna/Okanagan area on this trip, but feel free to leave suggestions for northern BC as well, if you have them. It’s never too early to start thinking about future trips.

10 Days to Go

First, I need to thank everyone for the support, interest, and assistance provided for my trip thus far. I am overwhelmed at the kindness and generosity of friends, acquaintances, and even complete strangers.

I still have a lot to plan, but things are really starting to fall in place for the trip. I have accommodations arranged and booked for the most of the first half of the trip; everywhere but Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, and Parry Sound is booked. I’ve already gone through guidebooks and tourism websites for each location once, but now I’m starting to give every place a careful, detailed second look.

In fact, I am so excited about this trip that I have rolled out a very special accessory: my blue, French-themed Hello Kitty notebook. I’ve been saving this notebook for “a special occasion” for more than 5 years, probably even closer to 10 years. I’ve transferred this book from desk to desk as I’ve moved between dorms, apartments, and stints at my parents’ house, but I’ve never been able to put ink on the pages. This trip, though…this trip is a worthy cause.

Each city (or general location, for places like Cape Breton and PEI) has its own page, and I’m jotting down highlights and tips from my guidebooks. I’ve been collecting Canadian guidebooks for years, and of course the internet contains a plethora of tourist information, but I thought it would help to have all of the bits of information that I need most in one handy place.

I’m working on adding some more information to this site, but for now, I’ve added a page about the road trip aspect, and I’m working on a page about the project(s) that I’ll be compiling from the trip’s experiences. Thanks for visiting, be sure to come back and read my blogs during the trip. Questions, suggestions, and comments are all welcome.
